Most RV's contain thousands of dollars of sensitive electrical equipment, yet we routinely put them at risk by connecting them to unknown and untested power sources. Once you're plugged in, it's too late to tell if there is bad power, the damage has most likely been done. In the first two years when we were traveling in our RV without a Progressive system, I suffered from two blown video cameras, 1 blown PC and a blown credit card terminal ($1,500 worth of damage) before I realized what the problem was. Since installing my Progressive EMS, I've been protected on countless instances. Low voltage, high frequency, reverse polarity and faulty ground. Don't gamble with your power or your life. Install a Progressive Electrical Management System today.

RemoteThe EMS-HW50C unit is the hardwired model featuring a remote display. The display connects to the unit via a telephone like cable and is small enough to be mounted either by the unit or inside the RV. It shows the status of the power, and any error conditions. It is recommended to be installed between the inlet 110v and the Power Transfer Switch (the generator if you have one has it's own EMS). For motorhomes, the Power Transfer Switch is normally in the electrical bay / cupboard. For fifth-wheels you may need to remove one of the panels inside a bay to be able to access the switch. For that reason, many fifth-wheels go with the external Progressive EMS. The remote display cycles through all of the power characteristics (voltage, current, frequency) as well is displaying the Error condition (E0 indicates everything is normal), and the Previous Error condition.

If you would like a display outside and a second display inside, you might want to consider the Progressive Remote Display Kit which adds a second display to this model.

  • High/Low Voltage Protection: Whenever AC power falls below 104 volts, or rises above 132 volts, the EMS automatically shuts down power to the RV. The EMS will monitor the power and once the AC power rises above 104 volts, or below the 132 volt level, the time delay indicator flashes for the preset time and then automatically restores power to the RV.
  • Time Delay for A/C Compressor: If the AC power is interrupted, or the EMS detects a fault condition, the built-in time delay is activated. There are two settings on the EMS: one is 136 seconds (02:16), and the other is 15 seconds. Consult your air conditioner manual to see if it has a time delay built in. If so, use the 15 second delay, if not; use the 136 second delay. The factory setting is 15 seconds.
  • 5-Mode Surge Protection: This feature provides full surge protection L-N, L-N, L-G, L-L and N-G. Total Joule rating is 3,580, 88,000A surge current. Response time of <1 nano second.
  • Surge Indicator: In the event of a power surge, and the surge protector circuit is damaged within the EMS, L-N or L-G, the digital display error code will read E-10. This indicates the EMS needs to be serviced.
  • Reverse Polarity Protection: If AC power is a reverse polarity condition, the EMS will not allow power to the RV and the error code will read E-1.
  • Open Neutral Protection: If AC power has an open neutral condition, the display will not light, and the EMS will not allow power to the RV.
  • Open Ground Protection: If AC power has an open ground condition, the EMS will read an error code of E-2 and power will not be allowed to the RV.
  • AC Frequency Protection: If AC power frequency deviates +/- 9 hertz from 60 cycles per second, the EMS will shut down power. An error code of E-7 will be displayed when the frequency is high; and an error code will be displayed when frequency is low.
  • Accidental 240V Protection: If 240 volts is detected when plugging into AC power, the EMS will NOT allow power to the RV. If this condition occurs while power is applied to the RV, the EMS shuts off power instantly. The display will read the voltage and E-3 for the error. (NEVER BYPASS THE EMS WHEN THIS OCCURS.)
  • Remote Display: Continuously scrolls all of the AC power information, including voltage, current, frequency, error codes and previous errors. Each reading is displayed for two (2) seconds.
  • Previous Error Code: This feature tells the user what the previous error was and why power was interrupted to the RV. To read a previous error code, put a "P" in front of the "E" code. This is only displayed if an actual error occurs. The error is deleted when power is disconnected from the EMS.
  • Bypass: This switch is located on the remote panel, and allows the user to bypass the computer circuit in the EMS in the event of computer failure, thus allowing AC power into the RV. This does not disable the surge protection portion of the EMS; however, all other features are disabled.
  • Modular Design: Replacement parts are designed for simple plug and play, making repairs extremely user friendly.
  • Microprocessor Controlled: The computer is driven by a state-of-the-art microprocessor that is programmed with software to drive the entire EMS.

Hardwired vs Portable February 16, 2016
Reviewer: Don G. from ON Canada
I have a hardwired system with the remote located next to the refrigerator inside our trailer and the surge protector inside the trailer and wired directly to the convertor.  All this was installed by an RV technician.

When I hook up to "shore power" for the trailer, my wife watches the error code on the remote. And I am glad that it is not a post model.

This week (after heavy rainfall) my neighbour RVer with the post model, discovered that his readout for Line 2 read 98 volts.  But the park checked the power supply and found it was within normal limits.  The RVer than unhooked the unit from the power post and trailer.  Shook it and could hear water inside.  Once he removed the water, the unit returned to normal readings.  He feels that the water gained entry  where the wire from the power post entered the surge detector box.

For a few dollars more consider buying the hardwired model so that it is better protected within your trailer.

Progressive EMS HW50C July 9, 2015

Great product.  After installing the EMS it would not power my RV due to a grounding problem with error code (at home on an extension cord to keep the batteries charged).  It turned out I had bad adapter from my 50 amp to 15 amp on my power cable.

Ordered on a Saturday and item arrived on Tuesday--surprisingly fast shipping!  Installed with no problems.   Cut existing cable as suggested and put before transfer switch. Item works perfectly. Hope I never need the protection but I now have peace of mind knowing I will be OK. Definitely recommend TechnoRV.

Feeling safe June 11, 2015
Reviewer: Jay Sayrahder from Tucson, AZ United States
Installed as instructed. Short distance, cramped area for all the wires to fit. However, managed as instructed. Works great giving readout of volts on L-1 & L-2 as designed with amp draw. Perfect to insure proper power to the system. Must say, also looks like a professional installation.
