Description Technical Specs

When you're traveling, it's hard to be reduce the amount that you bring and carry with you, yet it's important to make sure that you have what you need when you need it. Scanning your photos and documents is a big help, but scanners are generally large and cumbersome. Here's a scanner that we tested at CES this year and loved it. It's easy to use, accepts documents of all sizes from small receipts to full size pages, plus doesn't need to be connected to your laptop. Most importantly though, there's a small screen to show you what you've scanned. I've tested several handheld scanners without this feature and you're constantly wondering if you've scanned the document correctly.

This all means that it's easy to scan your documents anywhere - while traveling in the front passenger chair, in your easy chair, even in bed! Once you're done, simply transfer the photos to your computer using the (included) 1Gb SD card, or plug the scanner into a USB port and copy over the files directly (drag and drop). Don't have 110v power while you're traveling? No problem. Simply power the scanner from your laptop, or from the optional 12v to USB adapter.

If you're interested in the kind of results you'll get, here's some scanned files the I created with my scanner: Taj (25 year old 4' x 6' photo), magazine article, receipt and a letter.

Here's the full low-down:

When you need something scanned you don't want to wait for a computer to start up, hunt for a cable and then have to figure out how to work the software. The Portable Scanner solves this problem and gives you a one-touch, stand-alone solution for converting all your photos and documents to digital files directly to an SD card.

Its slim, sleek design is a perfect addition to any home, office or dorm room. Alternatively, its SD card support and portable design gives you the flexibility to scan remotely without the need of a computer. An adjustable paper feeder gives you the convenience of setting the most commonly used photo sizes (3x5, 4x6, 6x8) for quick, accurate conversion. You can scan documents up to standard letter sizes of 8' x 11" in both color and black-and-white.

The high-resolution 300 DPI scanning ability ensures you will not lose any quality during the conversion process and the included "paper sleeve" protects your originals while scanning. With the Portable Scanner, what you scan is preserved perfectly in digital form and will never deteriorate like paper photos and documents.

Now you can monitor your scanned images and documents immediately after being scanned with its integrated 2.4" LCD screen with zoom and rotate functions. Share your photos easily by ejecting the SD card and inserting it into any compatible reader such as a digital photo frame, mobile phone or computer.
Connect the scanner directly to a Mac or PC computer, without the need of drivers, with the included USB cable. Just plug-in and drag-and-drop your files over to your computer for archival or uploading to the internet. With preset photo sizes, high-resolution 300 DPI scanning and one-touch, stand-alone operation, it gives you the simplest, most flexible, method of updating all your photos from the past and preserving any documents for the future. Once you are finished scanning you can use your favorite OCR or image editing software to improve the scanned files and make them better than they were originally.

Whatever you want to scan and wherever you want to scan it, the Portable Scanner is ready when you are.

  • We have identified an issue with connecting the Docuscan to Mac's running Snow Leopard (10.6) and above. Until this is rectified, we are not supporting the direct connect feature on this platform (you can still take the SD card out of the scanner and place it directly in your Mac).
  • The menu button will not function unless there is an image on the SD card. Try scanning an image by pressing the scan button and inserting paper or a photo, and then press the menu button.
  • The images will be given a sequential file name. If you remove every image from the SD card, the Docuscan will start again from zero. If you'd like to ensure that you don't have duplicate file names we suggest leaving the last image (the one with the highest number) on the SD card. The Docuscan will then resume naming from that number.

Portable Scanner October 22, 2012
Reviewer: Edwin Tubens from Lehigh Acres, FL United States
As of today it has been working very good and copies so far all documents I had scanned.   The only items that broke while scanning was the clear cover for which I think is 5 x 7.  I think you should include a few with the shipment.   Otherwise the product meets my needs.
