Works... most of the time
So far we have used the garmin for about 3000 miles of RV travel. It seems to work pretty well. We have had a could times that is took us on the long route when I don't think it was necessary and two times that we ended up in a construction detour on some back roads that could have been avoided it we followed google.
I am glad we have it and will continue to use it to guide our way. We are just a little more diligent about looking at other apps before we leave to verify the routes.
ps. When it lead us a stray we did verify that there were better routes after the fact. -
890 good, but could be better
I am very happy with this GPS after a 2800 mile trip, but there are some things that would improve it. First, it would be nice if it showed the problem with a route (low bridge, weight restriction, propane). It tried to force us on a route that added 1 1/2 hours to our trip because of a perceived weight issue on I83, around exit 21. Of course, we didn’t know what it thought the problem was until we got there (yes, we ignored the recommended route). I am pretty sure it was not an actual problem as there were several 18 wheelers on that road and no weight restriction notifications. I want to know why we can’t take a particular route, rather than just trust the GPS blindly. We used another RV app, which does show issues along the route, before making the determination that we could go ahead and take our preferred route.
Also, it would be great if it offered a few route options, rather than just a single route. I didn’t want to place the 890 on the windshield so I purchased an adhesive disk and placed it on the dashboard. The window mount for the 890 worked great on the disk. -
Garmin 890
Techno RV customer service is outstanding. The Garmin 890 paid for itself on the first day of our 2 week trip. We were headed to Alpine, Tx for a stop over and the Garmin kept routing me off the highway and into town from the north. I didn't agree so I stayed on the highway. Just as we got into town the Garmin had us turn into a residential area and take back streets to the RV park. I stopped in the road to check the route and a nice couple stopped to make sure we were OK. I explained the route issue and he said it had routed me around a low bridge and gave us directions to the RV park that matched the Garmin. When we checked into the RV park I told the owner about the route and she said I would have ripped the top off my fifth wheel on the bridge. A quick check of google earth and I found the bridge that I had to go under and it was 8" lower than the top of my 5th wheel. The Garmin saved the trip and easily paid for itself.
The reason I didn't give the gps a 5 star rating is because data input and searches are not as easy as they are with other gps/mapping software. I now do all of my routing/mapping the night before the trip. I highly recommend the Garmin 890 and highly highly recommend Techno RV. -
Love the routing
I have tested this on some local roads in the Northeast and each time this unit routed me around low overpasses. It is as advertised and I love it. Thanks TechnoRV!

Routing is great
I got this unit so I would be routed based on the size of my RV. This is going great, and in addition it is easy to use and I love the magnetic mount that makes it easy to take the screen on and off of the mount.
